- Per-unit FBA cost = referral fee + fulfillment fee + 3.5% surcharge + storage share + conditional fees.
- Most US categories charge a 15% referral fee with a $0.30 minimum, per Amazon's published fee table.
- In 2026 the fulfillment fee varies with tier, billed weight and the item's price, which now falls into one of three bands.
- Standard-size storage runs $0.78 a cubic foot each month for most of the year and $2.40 a cubic foot in the last quarter.
- Peak fulfillment rates cover any unit that ships from mid-October 2026 through January 14, 2027.
- Confirm every figure in Amazon's Revenue Calculator or Fee Preview report before you set a price.
What will you be able to calculate by the end of this guide?
You will be able to work out the full Amazon cost of selling one FBA unit in the US: referral fee, fulfillment fee, surcharge, storage and the conditional fees that only some sellers pay. With that number and your landed cost, you get profit per unit, margin and a safe minimum price.
Search tools call this an "FBA fee calculator" problem, but a calculator is only as good as the inputs you give it. Most pricing mistakes come from feeding a tool the wrong size tier or forgetting storage, not from bad arithmetic. So the steps below build each input by hand first, then check the result in two calculators.
You will need:
- The packaged dimensions (inches) and packaged weight of one unit.
- Your planned selling price and the product's fee category.
- Your landed cost per unit: product, freight to Amazon, prep and labels.
- A rough idea of how many days of stock you hold, since storage and some surcharges depend on it.
All rates in this guide are US marketplace figures for 2026. UK and EU sellers use different rate cards, which we cover in the mistakes section.
Which Amazon fees go into a per-unit FBA calculation?
A per-unit FBA calculation has two fees charged on every sale, the referral fee and the fulfillment fee, plus monthly storage that you spread across units. On top of those sit conditional fees: inbound placement, the low-inventory-level fee, the aged inventory surcharge and the returns processing fee. Each one has its own trigger.
| Fee | When you pay it | What sets the amount (US, 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Referral fee | Every sale | A category percentage of the full price, never less than $0.30 in most categories |
| FBA fulfillment fee | Every unit shipped | Tier, billed weight and which price band the item sits in |
| Fuel and logistics surcharge | Each unit shipped from April 17, 2026 onward | An extra 3.5% on top of fulfillment |
| Monthly storage | Every month | Average daily cubic feet, with a higher October to December rate |
| Inbound placement fee | When you choose fewer inbound locations | Size tier, weight, split choice and destination region |
| Low-inventory-level fee | When stock cover falls below four weeks | Size tier and how low your days of supply fall |
| Aged inventory surcharge | Units older than 180 days | Cubic feet and age band |
| Returns processing fee | Returns beyond your category threshold; apparel and shoes are charged on all returns | Size tier and weight |
A Professional selling plan also costs $39.99 a month. It is a fixed account cost, so most sellers keep it out of the per-unit figure and cover it in overheads.
How do you calculate Amazon FBA fees, step by step?
Work through seven steps in order: find the size tier and billed weight, apply the referral fee, look up the fulfillment fee and surcharge, convert storage into a per-unit amount, add conditional fees, total everything against your price, then verify the result in Amazon's own tool and model scenarios in a profit calculator.
- Find the size tier and shipping weight from the packaged dimensions and weight.
- Apply the referral fee for your fee category to the full sale price.
- Look up the fulfillment fee for your tier, weight band and price band, then add the 3.5% surcharge.
- Turn monthly storage into a per-unit cost using cubic feet and days on hand.
- Add the conditional fees that apply to you: placement, low inventory, aged stock and returns.
- Total the fees and subtract them, with landed cost, from the price to get profit per unit.
- Verify and model in the Amazon Revenue Calculator and the SellerVine FBA profit calculator.
Each step has its own section below.
Step 1: How do you find your size tier and shipping weight?
Measure the packaged unit and test the tiers in order; the first one it fits is the one you pay. Small standard items are billed on unit weight. Large standard and bulky items are billed on whichever is higher, actual weight or dimensional weight, which is length times width times height in inches, divided by 139.
| Size tier (2026) | Longest x median x shortest side | Maximum weight |
|---|---|---|
| Small standard | 15 x 12 x 0.75 in | 16 oz |
| Large standard | 18 x 14 x 8 in | 20 lb |
| Small bulky | 37 x 28 x 20 in, 130 in length plus girth | 50 lb |
| Large bulky | 59 x 33 x 33 in, 130 in length plus girth | 50 lb |
| Extra-large | Anything larger or heavier | Priced in weight bands up to 150 lb and above |
Small bulky is new for 2026: Amazon split the old large bulky tier in two on January 15, 2026. These limits come from Amazon's size tier page as reproduced by third-party fee guides, because the Seller Central original sits behind a login.
Fees follow the dimensions Amazon recorded for the ASIN. If a box measured at the warehouse comes out bigger than your packaging spec, you pay the higher tier until it is corrected, so compare the Fee Preview report with your own figures.
Step 2: How much is the Amazon referral fee for your category?
The referral fee is a percentage of the total sale price, including any shipping or gift wrap charge, and Amazon takes the higher of that percentage or a per-item minimum, usually $0.30. Most US categories charge 15%. Some categories are tiered by price, so the rate can change as your price crosses a threshold.
A few rows from Amazon's public US fee table on sell.amazon.com:
- Home and Kitchen, Sports and Outdoors, Toys and Games, Pet Supplies: 15%.
- Beauty, Health and Personal Care, and Baby Products: 8% at $10 or less, 15% above $10.
- Clothing: 5% at $15 and under, 10% above $15 through $20, and 17% over $20.
- Electronics Accessories: 15% of the price up to $100 and 8% of any portion above it.
- Consumer Electronics and Computers: 8%.
Amazon notes that a product's fee category may not match the category shoppers see. Look up the category Amazon actually bills in the Fee Preview report. In October 2026 some sellers received notices moving ASINs to a different fee category, which can change this line without any edit to the listing.
Step 3: What is the FBA fulfillment fee in 2026?
For 2026, Amazon prices US fulfillment by tier, billed weight and three price bands, split at $10 and $50. A large standard item billed at just over 1 lb and priced between $10 and $50 pays $5.04 at non-peak rates, before the 3.5% fuel surcharge Amazon added on April 17, 2026.
| Non-apparel, non-peak 2026 | Priced $10 to $50 | Priced under $10 | Priced above $50 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small standard, up to 2 oz | $3.32 | $2.43 | $3.58 |
| Small standard, above 14 oz up to 1 lb | $3.96 | $2.95 | $4.22 |
| Large standard, up to 4 oz | $3.73 | $2.91 | $3.99 |
| Large standard, above 1 lb up to 1.25 lb | $5.04 | $4.22 | $5.30 |
| Large standard, above 3 lb up to 20 lb | $6.97, plus 8 cents for each extra 4 oz | $6.15, plus 8 cents | $7.23, plus 8 cents |
Apparel and dangerous goods have their own, higher tables. Rows above are from the 2026 rate card as reproduced by AMZ Prep, cross-checked against WarehousingCosts; the full card sits inside Seller Central.
Then apply two adjustments:
- Surcharge: multiply the fee by 1.035. Amazon put the average at about $0.17 per unit for US FBA, according to Retail Dive's report of the announcement, and gave no end date.
- Peak season: units shipped out in the window that opens October 15, 2026 and closes January 14, 2027 pay peak rates, about $0.32 more per unit on average in the US. The same 1+ to 1.25 lb row is $5.34 at peak. Our holiday 2026 peak fees guide has more rows.
Amazon announced an average FBA increase of eight cents a unit starting January 15, 2026, and said it was adding no new fee types. The averages hide wide swings by price band and tier, plus the later 3.5% surcharge. Our breakdown of FBA fee changes and margin impact shows how to re-model a catalog.
Step 4: How do you turn monthly storage into a per-unit cost?
Convert the packaged volume to cubic feet (cubic inches divided by 1,728), multiply by the monthly rate, then by the months a typical unit sits before it sells. In 2026, standard-size items pay $0.78 a cubic foot each month in January through September, rising to $2.40 for October through December, roughly triple.
Oversize items pay $0.56 off-peak and $1.40 in the last quarter. Two extra layers can apply:
- Storage utilization surcharge: added when your stored volume is high compared with what you ship over 13 weeks. New sellers, Individual sellers and accounts storing a daily average of 25 cubic feet or under do not pay it.
- Aged inventory surcharge: kicks in once a unit passes 180 days, at $0.50 a cubic foot for the first month and climbing to $5.90 just before the one-year mark. After a year the charge is $6.90 a cubic foot with a $0.30 per-unit floor, and after about 15 months it becomes $7.90 with a $0.35 floor.
Storage rates come from third-party reproductions of Amazon's rate card, since Amazon's own page requires a login. If you hold slow movers, plan a promotion, removal or liquidation at around 150 days so units leave before the first surcharge band.
Step 5: Which conditional FBA fees should you budget for?
Budget for three conditional fees even if you hope to avoid them: the inbound placement fee when you ship to fewer locations, the low-inventory-level fee when supply falls under 28 days, and the returns processing fee when returns pass your category threshold. Each can turn a thin margin negative.
Inbound placement fee
If you send everything to one or a few locations, Amazon charges to spread it. For a large standard item over 12 oz up to 1.5 lb, the minimal split fee is reported at $0.24 to $0.50 per unit depending on region. Amazon-optimized splits carry no placement fee. New Professional sellers get a $400 inbound placement credit, per Amazon. See our inbound placement fee strategy for when each option wins.
Low-inventory-level fee
Amazon charges it when an item holds fewer than 28 days of cover, measured against both your 30-day and 90-day sales. For large standard items up to 3 lb it runs from $0.36 to $0.97 per unit depending on how low supply falls. New Professional sellers get a one-year exemption. Our low-inventory-level fee guide covers the reorder math.
Returns processing fee
For most products, the fee applies only to returns above a category threshold, such as 8.1% for Home and Kitchen. For a large standard item at 1+ to 1.25 lb the reported fee is $3.70 per return above the line. Clothing and footwear are charged on all returns, threshold or not.
What does a full FBA fee calculation look like?
Here is a complete calculation for an illustrative $29.99 kitchen tool in Home and Kitchen. The product, cost and days on hand are invented for teaching; the fee rates are the 2026 US figures quoted above. Off-peak, Amazon fees come to about $10.27 a unit, leaving $12.22 before advertising on a $7.50 landed cost.
The unit is packed in a 9 x 6 x 3 in box and weighs 0.6 lb. The 3 in side rules out small standard, so it is large standard. Dimensional weight is 162 divided by 139, or 1.17 lb, which is above the unit weight, so it is billed in the 1+ to 1.25 lb band. Volume is 0.094 cubic feet.
| Line (per unit) | Off-peak | Peak (Oct 15 to Jan 14) |
|---|---|---|
| Sale price | $29.99 | $29.99 |
| Referral fee, 15% | $4.50 | $4.50 |
| Fulfillment fee | $5.04 | $5.34 |
| 3.5% surcharge | $0.18 | $0.19 |
| Storage, 2 months on hand | $0.15 | $0.45 |
| Inbound placement (assumed minimal split) | $0.40 | $0.40 |
| Total Amazon fees | $10.27 | $10.88 |
| Landed cost (illustrative) | $7.50 | $7.50 |
| Profit before ads | $12.22 (40.7%) | $11.61 (38.7%) |
Assumptions: returns stay under the 8.1% threshold, stock never drops below 28 days of supply, and nothing ages past 180 days. If any of those breaks, add the matching fee from Step 5. Advertising comes next: at a 10% TACoS this unit gives up another $3.00. Our ACoS and TACoS calculator shows how much ad spend the margin can carry.
How do you check your FBA fees in a calculator?
Use two tools for different jobs. Amazon's free Revenue Calculator gives the official fee for a specific ASIN or set of dimensions, so treat it as the authority on fee amounts. The SellerVine FBA profit calculator then takes those fees and shows profit, margin, break-even price and monthly profit at your volume.
- Open Amazon's Revenue Calculator, search your ASIN or enter dimensions, weight, category and price, and note each fee it returns. Amazon says the tool, the Fee and Economics Preview report and the Profit Analytics dashboard carry 2026 rates.
- Check the Fee Preview report (Reports, then Fulfillment, then Fee Preview) for the size tier and fee category Amazon is billing today.
- Enter those fees, your landed cost and expected monthly units into our free FBA profit calculator. It deliberately asks you to type in fees instead of using a built-in table, so it stays correct when Amazon changes rates, and it supports US, UK and EU currencies.
- Run a second scenario at peak fulfillment and Q4 storage rates, and a third with the conditional fees switched on.
Amazon's tool is the better choice for checking one product's fees against FBM. Ours is built for pricing decisions: break-even price, margin at volume and side-by-side scenarios.
What are the most common FBA fee calculation mistakes?
The most common mistakes are using scale weight when dimensional weight is higher, pricing a few cents over a band line, forgetting the 3.5% surcharge, leaving storage and conditional fees out, and copying US rates into UK or EU calculations. Each one makes a product look more profitable than it is.
- Ignoring dimensional weight. In the worked example, a 0.6 lb product bills at 1.17 lb because of its box.
- Pricing just over a band. A large standard item at 8+ to 12 oz pays $4.20 at $49.99 but $4.46 at $50.01.
- Using a 2025 rate card. The price bands and the small bulky tier are new for 2026.
- Treating Q4 like any other quarter. Peak fulfillment and tripled storage hit the same months.
- Assuming the browse category sets the fee. The fee category can differ.
- Applying US numbers abroad. UK and EU fees are priced in pounds and euros on separate rate cards, and consumer prices include VAT. Use the Revenue Calculator for that marketplace and our VAT margin calculator. The 3.5% surcharge was announced for the US and Canada.
What should your FBA fee checklist include?
Before you set or change a price, confirm the size tier and billed weight, the fee category and referral rate, the fulfillment fee for the right price band plus surcharge, storage at both off-peak and Q4 rates, and each conditional fee that could apply. Then check the total in Amazon's Revenue Calculator.
- Packaged dimensions and weight match what Amazon recorded.
- Dimensional weight checked for anything above small standard.
- Fee category confirmed in Fee Preview, not assumed from the browse path.
- Price band checked, especially near $10 and $50.
- Fulfillment fee multiplied by 1.035.
- Storage modeled at $0.78 and $2.40 per cubic foot for standard size.
- Placement option chosen and costed.
- At least four weeks of cover planned for every fast seller.
- Return rate compared with your category threshold.
- A holiday scenario run with peak fulfillment and Q4 storage.
- Final numbers saved in your profit calculator and reviewed each time Amazon publishes a fee change.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate Amazon FBA fees?
Add the referral fee, usually 15% of the sale price, to the fulfillment fee for your size tier, shipping weight and price band. Add the 3.5% fuel surcharge, a per-unit share of monthly storage, and any placement, low-inventory, aged inventory or returns fees that apply. Check the total in Amazon's Revenue Calculator.
Is there a free Amazon FBA fee calculator?
Yes. Amazon's Revenue Calculator is free and estimates fees for any ASIN or set of dimensions, and it compares FBA with fulfilling orders yourself. SellerVine's free FBA profit calculator takes those fees plus your landed cost and shows profit per unit, margin, break-even price and monthly profit in US, UK or EU currency.
How much does Amazon FBA cost per item in 2026?
It depends on size, weight, price and category. As an example, a $29.99 large standard home item billed at just over 1 lb pays a $4.50 referral fee and a $5.04 fulfillment fee plus 18 cents of surcharge at non-peak rates. With storage and placement, Amazon fees come to roughly $10 per unit.
What is the Amazon FBA fulfillment fee for small items?
For 2026, a small standard item weighing up to 2 oz pays $3.32 when priced from $10 to $50, $2.43 below $10, and $3.58 above $50, before the surcharge. Small standard covers packages up to 15 x 12 x 0.75 inches and 16 oz, billed on unit weight.
Are Amazon FBA fees higher in Q4?
Yes. Peak fulfillment fees cover units shipped in the window that opens October 15, 2026 and closes January 14, 2027, and average about $0.32 more per unit in the US. Standard-size storage also jumps to $2.40 a cubic foot per month in the final quarter, against $0.78 earlier in the year, so slow-selling stock costs much more in the last quarter.
Does the FBA calculator work for the UK?
Amazon runs a Revenue Calculator for each marketplace, so use the UK version for UK fees in pounds. UK and EU rate cards differ from the US, and consumer prices include VAT, so a US calculation will not transfer. SellerVine's FBA profit calculator accepts UK and EU fee inputs, and our VAT margin calculator handles the VAT step.
What is the difference between FBA fees and referral fees?
The referral fee is Amazon's selling commission, charged on every sale whether you use FBA or ship orders yourself, and it is a percentage of the price. FBA fees cover fulfillment and storage and apply only to inventory Amazon holds and ships. Your total Amazon cost per unit includes both.
