Formulas & Calculation Methodology

Our calculator enforces the strict financial relationship between your unit economics and ad spend. Below are the underlying mathematical formulas used to derive each metric:

1. Break-Even ACoS Formula Break-Even ACoS = (Pre-Ad Net Profit per Unit / Net Selling Price) × 100 If your net selling price is $30 and your pre-ad margin is $12, your break-even ACoS is 40.0%. Bidding at an ACoS below 40% generates profit; bidding above 40% loses money on the ad-driven order.
2. Advertising Cost of Sales (ACoS) ACoS = (Ad Spend / Ad-Attributed Sales) × 100 Measures the direct return of your ad clicks. Important: ACoS does not reflect total profitability because it ignores organic sales.
3. Total Advertising Cost of Sales (TACoS) TACoS = (Ad Spend / Total Gross Sales) × 100 Reflects true brand health. When advertising spend lifts organic ranking velocity, total sales expand faster than ad spend, causing TACoS to decline over time.
4. Net Profit per Unit After Ads Profit/Unit = Net Price - COGS - Amazon Fees - (Total Ad Spend / Estimated Units Sold) Estimated Units Sold = Total Gross Sales / Selling Price. This accounts for the blended ad burden across every physical unit shipped.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between ACoS and TACoS?

ACoS (Advertising Cost of Sales) measures the direct efficiency of ad campaigns by dividing ad spend by ad-attributed revenue. TACoS (Total Advertising Cost of Sales) measures overall brand health by dividing ad spend by total retail sales (organic plus paid). Managing campaigns solely by ACoS can lead to cutting ads that actually drive organic rank velocity.

How is Break-Even ACoS calculated?

Break-Even ACoS is equal to your pre-advertising net profit margin percentage. For a $30 product with $10 COGS and $8 Amazon fees, pre-ad profit is $12 (40% margin), meaning your Break-Even ACoS is exactly 40.0%.

Why must UK and European sellers account for VAT in Break-Even ACoS?

Amazon UK and EU prices are displayed VAT-inclusive to consumers. If you sell at £24 including 20% VAT, your net revenue is £20. Calculating ACoS against the £24 gross price overstates your margins and causes negative profit after ads.

What is considered a healthy TACoS on Amazon?

For mature, established brands, a healthy TACoS typically falls between 8% and 15%. For newly launched products in aggressive growth or rank-harvesting phases, TACoS may intentionally run at 20% to 30%.
