What is Amazon Error 8541?
Amazon Error 8541 means the product ID you entered (UPC, EAN, ISBN or JAN) already belongs to an existing ASIN, but one or more of the attributes you submitted, such as brand, title, colour or size, conflict with what that ASIN shows in the Amazon catalog. Amazon calls this a single matching error. To fix it, find the conflicting attribute in the error message, decide whether your product really is that ASIN, and then either match the catalog value exactly, list against the ASIN, or correct the product ID.
Error 8541 is one of the most common listing errors in Seller Central, and it is almost always fixable without deleting anything. The rest of this guide shows how to read the error, which fix fits your situation, and what to do if it keeps coming back.
What does the Error 8541 message say?
The wording varies slightly by marketplace and by how you listed the product, but it names the SKU, the matched ASIN and the attribute in conflict. Amazon moderators have quoted it like this:
"The provided SKU [SKU] conflicts with the Amazon catalogue. The standard product ID value(s) provided for this SKU corresponds to the ASIN [ASIN]; however, some information is in conflict with the Amazon catalogue. The conflicting attribute values(s) are Brand (Merchant: [your value] / Amazon: [catalog value]). If your product is this ASIN, modify these attributes to reflect Amazon catalogue values. If your product is different from this ASIN, check if the standard product ID value(s) are correct."
A shorter version appears in some processing reports: "8541: The value '[X]' specified cannot be used as it conflicts with the value '[Y]'". Either way, the two values in the message are the key: the first is what you sent, the second is what Amazon already holds.
Why does Error 8541 happen?
Amazon keeps one detail page per product. When you submit a product ID, Amazon looks it up. If it finds an ASIN with that ID, it compares the rest of your data with the catalog. Any mismatch on a key attribute triggers 8541. The usual causes are:
- You are listing a product that already has a detail page and typed the brand, title or a variation value differently.
- Small formatting differences: spacing, capitalisation, or singular versus plural ("Blue" vs "blue", "2 Pack" vs "2-Pack").
- The barcode belongs to someone else's product. Codes bought from resellers rather than GS1 are often already attached to another ASIN.
- Amazon standardised a value on the ASIN, such as product type or colour, and your later update conflicts with it.
- Your own catalog data is wrong (if you are the brand owner), so the conflict is real and the catalog needs correcting.
How do I find which attribute is in conflict?
Everything you need is in the error itself:
- Single listing: the error appears on screen when you save. Note the ASIN and both values.
- Spreadsheet or file upload: open the processing report. Amazon staff point sellers to the report at the bottom of the Add Products via Upload page. Each 8541 row shows the SKU, the matched ASIN and the Merchant vs Amazon values.
Then open the matched ASIN on Amazon (amazon.com/dp/ASIN) and compare it with your physical product. That one check decides which fix you need.
How to fix Amazon Error 8541, step by step
Confirm whether your product is the matched ASIN
Compare the ASIN's brand, title, images, size, colour and pack count with what you are selling. If it is the same product, go to Step 2. If it is a different product, go to Step 4.
Same product: accept Amazon's value
Amazon provides a reconciliation tool for exactly this case. In Amazon staff instructions the path is Catalog > Complete Your Drafts, then filter by Matching Reconciliation Conflicts, and choose Accept Amazon's value. Amazon's 2025 seller guidance also shows an Accept Amazon's Value option under Inventory > Manage All Inventory, in the Search Suppressed and Inactive Listings tab, under Incomplete listings. Amazon staff say the submission is processed in about 15 minutes.
Seller Central labels change from time to time. If you do not see these exact names, search Seller Central Help for "8541" or "Fix your products".
Same product, listed by file: match the values exactly or list against the ASIN
If you upload listings by spreadsheet, you have two options for each 8541 row:
- Change the conflicting columns so they match the catalog values shown in the processing report exactly, including spacing, capitalisation and plurals, then upload again.
- Or put the matched ASIN in the Product ID column with ASIN as the Product ID Type, so you join the existing listing instead of re-describing it.
Different product: check the product ID
If your product is not the matched ASIN, the barcode is the problem. Check that the UPC or EAN is the one printed on your product and that it is licensed to your company by GS1. If you bought codes from a reseller, they may already belong to another product, and you will need GS1 barcodes or a GTIN exemption. See our guides on fixing Error 8572 and applying for a GTIN exemption.
If the code is genuinely yours and the ASIN is using it wrongly, Amazon staff describe a Request product detail page change option in the same reconciliation view. You can track it under Help > Case log.
Brand owner and the catalog is wrong: request a correction
If you own the brand and the catalog value is wrong, do not change your data to match it. Open a case with Selling Partner Support (from the Help menu in Seller Central, or sellercentral.amazon.com/cu/contact-us) and include the ASIN, the attribute, the correct value, the error message and evidence such as packaging photos and your GS1 certificate. Amazon's detail page rules say the value shown on a page is chosen from several contributions, so a correction can take time to appear.
If it still fails, escalate with the batch details
If the error persists after matching the values, contact Selling Partner Support with the SKU, ASIN, error text, the batch ID from your upload and screenshots. Amazon staff on the forums recommend this route when the values appear to match but the error remains.
Error 8541 troubleshooting table
| What you see | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Brand conflict (Merchant vs Amazon) | Different spelling or capitalisation of the same brand | Match the catalog brand exactly, or Accept Amazon's value |
| Brand conflict, and it is not your brand on the ASIN | Barcode belongs to another product | Use GS1 barcodes registered to your brand, or a GTIN exemption |
| Title, colour or size conflict | Your description differs from the existing page | Match the values or list against the ASIN |
| Product type conflict after an edit | Amazon standardised the product type | Match Amazon's value; contact support if it is wrong |
| Values look identical but 8541 remains | Hidden differences or catalog lock | Copy values from the report; then escalate with the batch ID |
| You are the brand owner and the catalog is wrong | Incorrect contribution on the ASIN | Open a Selling Partner Support case with evidence |
Error 8541 vs 8542, 8560 and 8572
| Error | What it means | Where to start |
|---|---|---|
| 8541 | Your product ID matches one ASIN, but some attributes conflict | Match values or list against the ASIN (this guide) |
| 8542 | Your product ID is linked to two or more ASINs and your data matches none of them | Check the product ID; contact support if the catalog is wrong |
| 8560 | No matching ASIN, and a new ASIN needs a valid product ID and required attributes | Add the missing required data |
| 8572 | The UPC or EAN does not match the brand in the GS1 database | Fix Error 8572 |
Common mistakes that keep Error 8541 coming back
- Near matches. "Blue" is not "blue". Copy the catalog value from the report rather than retyping it.
- Deleting and relisting the SKU. Sellers report that this rarely fixes 8541 and can lose sales history. Fix the data instead.
- Uploading the same file again unchanged. The error will repeat until the conflicting value changes.
- Assuming the problem is your listing. Often the conflict is with an ASIN that already uses your barcode.
- Cheap barcodes. Codes not licensed from GS1 are a common root cause of 8541 and 8572.
How to prevent Error 8541
- Search Amazon for the product before creating a listing. If it exists, list against the existing ASIN.
- Buy barcodes directly from GS1 and keep your brand name identical everywhere: GS1, Brand Registry, packaging and Seller Central.
- Keep a master spreadsheet of approved catalog values (brand, colour names, size names) and copy from it.
- Read every processing report after an upload instead of assuming it went through.
Frequently asked questions
It means the UPC, EAN, ISBN or JAN you entered already belongs to an existing ASIN, but some of the attributes you submitted, such as brand, title, colour or size, conflict with the values Amazon holds for that ASIN. Amazon calls it a single matching error.
Copy the catalog value from the error or processing report rather than retyping it, because spacing, capitalisation and plurals must match exactly. If it still fails, contact Selling Partner Support with the SKU, ASIN, error text and batch ID.
Usually not. Sellers report that deleting and relisting rarely clears 8541 and can cost sales history. Matching the catalog value, accepting Amazon's value or listing against the existing ASIN is the normal fix.
Error 8541 means your product ID matches one ASIN but some attributes conflict. Error 8542 means your product ID is linked to two or more ASINs and your data matches none of them.
Yes, but through Amazon rather than by editing the listing to a different value. Open a Selling Partner Support case with the ASIN, the correct value and evidence such as packaging photos and your GS1 certificate.
GS1 barcodes registered to your brand prevent the most common cause, which is a barcode that already belongs to another product. Amazon checks product IDs against the GS1 database.
